Martha Hill
Artist Statement
Resume
Art is essential for me to express what I can only share through a visual language. I’ve always been intrigued by color, mark-making, and movement. My paintings begin with a memory of a color, an emotion, or simply by making marks. Working on paper with palette knife, oil paint, pencils, sandpaper, and other materials, I add and remove material. I’ve also recently begun making monotypes and collages as another way to interpret my vision. Each piece of art feels like choreography or a music composition as I interact with the space. References to landscape may emerge or the work may remain abstract. Each piece evokes a sense of place yet allows the viewer to decide what that place might be. Whatever the outcome, the process of discovery is both challenging and fulfilling.
Martha Hill is an artist living in Kingston, New York, working primarily in oils. After earning a BFA in 1984, she worked for many years in non-profit organizations before earning her Master’s in Special Education in 2001. During her 20-year teaching career, she continued her art through pastel and charcoal drawing. Beginning in 2011, Martha took drawing classes and workshops at the Woodstock School of Art. After discovering the joy of working with oil paints in 2016, she developed her current technique, combining mark-making and palette knife painting. Color, mood, and nature inspire her abstract paintings. She also creates monotypes, focusing on a range of values and expressive lines. Martha’s work has been shown in various Hudson Valley locations including Emerge Gallery, ArtBar Gallery, Catalyst Gallery, Limner Gallery, and the Woodstock Artists Association.
